Laos to Boost Wood Products Export to EU

The Department of Forestry (DOF) under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry collaborated with the International Trade Centre (ITC) to unveil the Export Guide on High Value-Added Wood Products on Thursday during a workshop in Vientiane that attracted participation from various public and private stakeholders last month.

The workshop participants received training on the critical details necessary for export operations to Europe markets. This include an in-depth understanding of both tariff and non-tariff measures, as well as EU's decisions, directives, and regulations, along with insights into wood product categories with high export potential.

As additional, the workshop clarified product-specific requirements, such as EU procedures of fumigation when it comes to wooden packaging to mitigate pest transmission and other packaging-related risks.

This guidance give benefits for both newcomers and experienced SMEs, and it offers a valuable resource for those entering export markets for the first time.

An increasing demand for timber products in Europe offers numerous opportunities for Laos, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, the report said.
